How to Make Eyeball Slime That Will Gross Out Your Kids

When Halloween rolls around, I’m transformed into a kid again. Suddenly, all things creepy, scary, and gross are The Best Things Ever.

One of my favorite things to do is bring each season into the classroom in a fun and hands-on way. During Halloween, Halloween STEM activities are a fun way to bring the creepy side of Halloween into the classroom.

Nothing is slimier and grosser than slime recipes, and we’ve made the science experiment even grosser by adding toy eyeballs. You’ll never look at slime the same way again!Looking for spooky science? This eyeball slime is the perfect gross science experiment to scare kids and make science the center of Halloween activities.

Kids will love getting their hands into this stretchy, gross eyeball slime that looks like someone lost their eyeballs.

Our favorite slime ratio is one part glue, 3/4 part water, and one part starch. Slime can be tricky, so check out this post for a detailed explanation on how to make foolproof slime and how to fix any possible issues that come up. This recipe does contain Borax, so if you’re looking for an alternative, try our baking soda slime recipe.  We also have an edible slime recipe!

  1. First, mix the glue, water, and food coloring.
  2. Next, add starch and stir.Looking for spooky science? This eyeball slime is the perfect gross science experiment to scare kids and make science the center of Halloween activities.
  3. Once the slime is firmed up (typically takes about five minutes), you can add the eyeballs.

We choose to make our slime red for maximum gross-out factor. The red slime clinging to the eyeballs reminded us of real eye sockets and how they are attached to the brain via the optic nerve.

How to Make Eyeball Slime a STEM Activity

There are three ways to transform this eyeball slime activity into a STEM activity.

Polymer Chain Lesson

The first way is to talk about how polymer chains are formed when the borax mixes with the molecules in the glue. When these chemicals react, they create stretchy molecule chains that are flexible and stretchy. Flexible plastic also uses the same bonding process. Without polymer bonds, we wouldn’t have plastic baggies, many kids toys, and fake leather.

Make three batches of the slime, using different ingredients or ratios. Try replacing the starch with another material. Of course, without the borax, the slime won’t gel right. See what happens when you add varying amounts of water to each recipe. Record the differences.

Eye Lesson

Since you’re playing with something that looks like the optic nerve and the eyes, talk a bit about how eyes work and why we can see. Here is a mini lesson on eyes that kids will enjoy.
