One of the things that I do not like about playdough is that it usually lasts about one day here. That is a lot of salt to waste if my kids want to play with it on a routine basis.
When I first heard about edible playdough, I was intrigued. Edible playdough is simply bread dough that you let the kids play with before baking (that is if they don’t take it outside and drop it in the dirt like Bo did to ours. We did not bake her dough, in case you were wondering).
In honor of apple week, we decided to make our playdough apple pie scented. We tried two different bread recipes, and I think I dislike both. In the future, I believe a true bread recipe with yeast would work best. We tried making ours with baking soda instead, but that left the bread stiff and crumbly. We also tried switching the amount of water and oil, but that also created a huge mess that left oil marks all over the place, so I don’t recommend that either.
The moral of the story and our mistakes are, if you are following a bread recipe for playdough, stick to the real recipe. This has been a public service announcement from Schooling a Monkey.
Edible Apple Pie Scented Playdough Recipe
We modified this recipe from The Kitchn. We used oil instead of butter, baking soda instead of yeast, and water instead of milk. It was kind of a disaster, so I recommend sticking to the actual recipe.
Ingredients (these are halved from the recipe above as we wanted to make less):
- 1 teaspoon fresh yeast
- 1/2 cup of water
- 1/2 cup of milk
- 1 tablespoon butter
- 1 tablespoon sugar
- 1/2 tablespoon salt
- 3 cups flour
- 1 teaspoon cinnamon
- 1/2 teaspoon cloves
- 1/2 teaspoon nutmeg
- 1/2 teaspoon allspice
- 2 teaspoons green or red food coloring (totally optional- it does look weird after baking)
Follow the directions in the recipe. Add the spices into the dry ingredients before mixing. Add the food coloring into the wet mixture before mixing into the dry ingredients. When it is time for the kneading stage, pass it along to the kids to play with. You will end up with a stiffer bread due to over-kneading, but at least you get to eat the results!
We actually had a lot of fun with the edible playdough. The dough is stickier and stretchier than ordinary playdough, and it’s fun to punch and poke. I like the smooth texture of real bread dough (although ours was too stiff, like I mentioned earlier).
Another edible playdough that could work really well is pie crust. We didn’t have anything to put inside a pie, though, which is why we stuck to bread.
